What is MOTS-c?
MOTS-c is a mitochondria-encoded peptide studied as a signal between mitochondria and the nucleus. Research links it to cellular stress adaptation, folate/AICAR/AMPK signaling, glucose metabolism, and skeletal-muscle responses.

How researchers examine it
Under metabolic stress, MOTS-c has been reported to influence AMPK-related pathways and nuclear gene expression. Much of the intervention evidence comes from cell and animal experiments rather than controlled therapeutic trials in humans.

What the research currently shows
A translational study found that exercise increased endogenous MOTS-c in a small human sample, while administered MOTS-c improved physical performance in mice. Those findings do not establish human efficacy or an accepted clinical protocol.
